Direct therapeutic support
Specialist therapeutic intervention for complex or high‑risk HSB/PSB cases, offering safe, clinically overseen support when non‑specialist work is not enough.
While many young people benefit from non‑specialist support, some situations require specialist, clinically overseen intervention.
Your support has been amazing, we can’t thank you enough, I have learned so much from you and I can already tell its had such a positive impact on my relationship with B. At the time, I think we all panicked and thought the worse- you have allowed us to view those behaviours so difficulty. B talks so much more openly now about his feelings, which is incredible.
Feedback from family
Many children and young people who display HSB/PSB benefit from direct work to support desistance and promote healthy development. In many cases, this work can be safely and effectively delivered by non-specialist professionals with support and guidance from our service.
However, in complex or high‑risk cases, non‑specialist intervention may not be safe or effective. This includes situations where:
- There is a high likelihood of repeated behaviours
Patterns suggest the behaviour may continue without specialist assessment and intervention. - The child has experienced their own sexual victimisation
Their history increases complexity and requires specialist understanding and oversight. - Previous interventions have not achieved the desired outcomes
Earlier support has not led to change, indicating deeper needs that require specialist input. - The case involves significant safeguarding concerns
The level of risk or vulnerability requires a more intensive, clinically informed approach.
When is specialist intervention appropriate?
The feedback I would give is that Dr Burke and his team were excellent in their manner, support and advice given. It was a really valuable input which helped myself, my colleagues and the family through what can be a really difficult and upsetting time. Highly professional and highly recommended. Thank you again for your support.

Our Approach
All direct interventions are delivered by an experienced therapist, with clinical supervision provided by Dr Ian Burke, ensuring the highest standards of care and professional oversight.
Both specialist assessment and direct intervention are delivered within a multi-agency and multi-disciplinary framework, including:
- Regular network meetings
- Effective professional liaison and communication
- Risk management and safeguarding planning
- Trauma-informed care and formulation
Not all specialist assessments will lead to one-to-one work, and not all one-to-one work requires a prior specialist assessment. Each case is considered individually, based on risk, need, and context.
