In person training courses
Our training courses help caregivers and professionals understand and support children and young people.
Our training courses are carefully designed to complement the DECC service delivery, enabling Therapeutic Parenting Teams and supporting best practice.
Introduction to Trauma, Attachment & Therapeutic Parenting
This two-day training programme offers a trauma-informed approach to understanding the emotional and behavioural needs of children and young people. It explores how early experiences of neglect, inconsistent caregiving, and relational trauma affect attachment, brain development, and a child’s sense of safety.
The course is delivered in two parts, typically spaced 2-4 weeks apart, allowing time for reflection and integration of learning between sessions.
Upcoming training:
- 14th January & 28th January 2026, 9:30am - 2:30pm
- 14th April & 21st April 2026, 9:30am - 2:30pm
Day 1 provides a foundational understanding of how early relational experiences and trauma shape a child’s development, behaviour, and emotional world.
Key areas of learning:
Attachment theory: How attachment patterns form and influence a child’s sense of self, relationships, and worldview.
Developmental trauma: The impact of trauma on brain development, sensory processing, and emotional regulation.
Adolescent brain development: Neurological changes during adolescence and how these present both challenges and opportunities for therapeutic work.
Participants will explore how trauma affects a child’s ability to feel safe, trust others, and regulate emotions, and how these experiences manifest in behaviour. This session lays the groundwork for therapeutic responses rooted in empathy, connection, and understanding.
Day 2 introduces practical, relationship-focused strategies for supporting children with complex emotional needs through therapeutic parenting.
Key areas of learning
Therapeutic parenting models:
The role of play: Exploring how play supports emotional development and strengthens relational bonds.
Carer wellbeing: Recognising the emotional impact of caregiving and strategies for maintaining resilience and self-care.
Participants will leave with a toolkit of therapeutic strategies designed to foster trust, connection, and emotional safety—both for the children they care for and themselves as carers.
Creative Approaches to Building Attachment
Delivered by experienced creative therapists, this immersive one-day course offers a playful, hands-on exploration of how expressive arts and play-based techniques can strengthen attachment bonds with children affected by relational and developmental trauma.
The training deepens understanding of trauma’s impact on brain development and attachment, while building confidence in using symbolic and sensory-based approaches to support healing and resilience.
Upcoming Training: 13th November 2025, 9:30am - 2:30pm
Neurodiversity and Trauma
Training for carers and professionals to improve support for neurodivergent looked after children and young people.
We will be looking at how attachment and trauma are experienced as a neurodivergent child and ways to support attachment security and trauma recovery.
We will explore the strengths, challenges and potential of neurodivergent young people and how therapeutic parenting can promote positive life experiences.
Upcoming Training: February 2026 - TBC
Thinking Therapeutically about Narratives and Life Stories
This training is for Social Workers working with Children in Care, whether during care proceedings or in long-term placements. It explores how to communicate with children about difficult aspects of their lives, including their 'entry to care' narrative, and how to support their psychological development through these conversations.
Participants will have the opportunity to practice essential skills, reflect on common dilemmas, and gain practical methods they can apply in their work with children in care.
Upcoming Training: Date TBC
