How we can help
We have lots of ideas about how to help, no matter how big or how small the problem may be.
We have a special team of people, who are passionate about helping young people that may be having a difficult time and are looking for some support.
Who are we?
The DECC is a team of people who have experience in working with, and supporting, children and young people who have had difficult life experiences. The young people we support at The DECC, have care experience, this may mean that they live with foster carers, within a residential home or are Care Leavers (18+ years old).
You can meet the whole team, at our Meet The Team, page.
How might we help?
We can all struggle to make sense of how we feel at times and we may need some help to understand our thoughts and feelings. We believe that there are many different ways to do this, and think that it is important to find the best way to help.
We will spend some time speaking to your carers and other trusted adults, such as your social worker. This is an important part of figuring out, how we might help.
This may mean, that our way of helping you includes supporting your carers too, as we believe that they are so important in helping you to feel cared for, listened to, and good about yourself. We want to make sure that they feel confident in being able to support you as best as they can.
We will start to work out what the next steps might look like and find out if therapy sessions could help.
What is therapy?
We use the word 'therapy' to describe the action of receiving support from a specially trained person, such as a practitioner or therapist, who can help to make positive change.
At The DECC, we may provide this support to your foster carer(s) or even adults at school. We will help them to understand what you might be thinking or feeling, because if they feel more confident in supporting you, this should make things easier for you too.
We may also work with you directly, supporting you with your feelings, thoughts or changes that might be happening in your life. You would be asked what you think about this first.
What might therapy look like?
Therapy sessions may involve both you and your foster carer(s), where you all attend a session together. Sometimes sessions may also happen separately, with you or your caregivers meeting with your practitioner 1:1. We will figure this out and find out what works for you!
At The DECC we know that talking about your thoughts and feelings can sometimes be difficult. So, we often use a tool-kit of resources, such as drawing, painting or simply playing, to make this easier for you to express and communicate how you may be feeling!
Where will therapy take place?
Therapy sessions will usually take in-person at one of our therapy bases in either Derby City or Cromford. We have different therapy rooms within our bases, which you can take a look at on our 'Find Us' page - check it out!
Sometimes, we may also meet with your trusted adults online, over Microsoft Teams or even visit your school or home, if seen as helpful.
