Frequently asked questions
Yes, all of our projects for young people are free to access, except for our training accommodation; we charge a reasonable rental cost on these, to cover the expenses of delivering them.
Yes, what you say, stays between you and Action for Children. However, sometimes we may need to pass information on, for example if you tell us something that puts you or someone else in danger or if you are about to commit a criminal offence.
In our service this applies to all service users including those over 18 years old and during your first meeting you will be asked to consent to this. This will be fully explained by your worker.
We recognise people can have a homeless crisis at anytime but unfortunately we are not available 24/7 and our office closes at 5:15pm each day (other than our evening sessions).
If you experience homelessness during the day please come to our office as quickly as possible as this gives us the greatest chances of finding you a solution.
Outside of office hours then you can go to St Julian's Hostel if over 18; if you are under 18 then you can call 01481 222222 and ask to speak to the duty Children's social worker.
We have 2 projects where we welcome volunteers.
Firstly, our Nightstop programme where volunteers provide a spare room, a hot meal and a listening ear for a young person who is experiencing being homeless.
Secondly, our Action Mentors are all volunteers. Action mentors are volunteer who become a young person's person, usually meeting with them once a week in the community.
If you are interested in either of these then look at the current opportunities section of our meet the team page, to see if we are currently recruiting volunteers.
The only thing we ask is that you do not turn up under the influence of substances, are able to engage in your session and that you act in a respectful way to our team and with other young people that may be accessing our services.
We reserve the right to refuse a service to those that do not present in this way.
The short answer to this is, generally, no we don't. Our offer is always to consider Nightstop and mediation before we would consider any other alternatives. As a charity, we do not have lots of funds available to pay for hotels for young people and they are not a long term solution to homelessness.
Around 35p in every £1 that we spend comes from a donation or grant.
Donations are essential to be able to committee to deliver our services at the highest possible quality and growing our offer to reach even more young people.
If you are a representative of an employer charity committee, a potential donor or you have a fundraising idea please get in touch.
Action for Children ensures that any money that is donated to our work in Guernsey, remains ring fenced for the purpose of the delivery of services to young people here in Guernsey.
We are always happy to talk about our services, we can attend lunch & learn sessions in workplaces, team meetings or arrange one off information and awareness sessions. The more people that know about our services, the better!
We also run a number of coffee mornings throughout the year where you can see our service presentation and meet some of our team.
Yes, whilst we are a UK charity, we also hold a local registration in Guernsey as a branch of that charity, with our own managing officials who lead our work on the Island.

This training explores the substances which young people self report are most frequently used by this age group. For each substance we explore what it does to the body, the signs you might spot and what immediate keep safe messaging you can give. The session is around 2.5 hours long and was co-created with Liam Watson of Drugs Training. Our partners at Independence and H.I.C also co deliver this session.
This training offers an insight into youth homelessness, it explores why youth homelessness is different to that of adults, exploring it's causes, the impacts and possible solutions. It will help professionals understand where they can signpost to and how to respond to a young person who has presented at risk of being homeless.
