For parents & carers
We're here for families in Manchester to support with challenging behaviour.
Learn what to expect and what support you'll get with MST.
What is MST?
MST helps parents manage severe and persistent antisocial behaviour by working alongside them to assess what is contributing to the behaviour.
We do this by looking at the systems around the child and identifying which of these systems are impacting their behaviour. These systems include parents, siblings, wider family, peers, social media, school, and the community. Once we have identified the contributing factors together, we then create plans focused on minimising antisocial behaviour.
The therapist starts by working with the parent on the primary concerns. They use an analytical process to work on these, step-by-step, with the family. The therapist is in contact with the family 3–4 times per week (or more if needed) and on‑call support is available 24/7.
The family has a high level of support – but it's not easy! Sometimes things get worse before better, but all our families say they wish they had the support years ago.

How we work
More about the process
Getting started
- We’ll meet with you to talk about your family’s needs.
- Together, we’ll decide if this support is right for you.
- You choose if you want to continue - there’s no pressure.
Your therapist
- If you decide to go ahead, you’ll be matched with a therapist.
- The same therapist will work with you throughout.
- There’s also a back-up therapist, just in case your main therapist is away. You won’t have to repeat your story.
Working together
- We focus on supporting parents and carers. Your child or young person doesn’t need to be present.
- We’ll talk about the behaviours you’re worried about.
- Together, we’ll set goals and make a plan to help things improve.
- We’ll build on what’s already working well in your family.
Where will sessions take place?
- Sessions usually happen at your home, but we can meet somewhere else if that’s better for you.
- Each session lasts about an hour, three times a week.
- Alternatively, we can meet by phone, or by text - whatever works for you.
What happens in a session
- We’ll check how things went since the last visit.
- We’ll talk about what’s working and what needs to change.
- Together, we’ll agree on next steps to try before the next session.
- If something isn’t working, we’ll help you find a new way forward.
- Every week, we’ll check your goals to make sure we’re on track.
How long does it last?
- Support usually lasts between 12 and 20 weeks.
- Most families have three sessions a week, but we can do more if you need extra help.
- As things improve, we might meet less often.
Extra support when you need it
- We’re flexible and will fit around your schedule.
- If something unexpected or worrying happens, you can reach us any time. This service is available 24/7.
