Become an Independent Visitor

Learn about what and IV is and how you can become one.

An Independent Visitor is an adult who volunteers to regularly spend free time with a young person in care.

Becoming an Independent Visitor (or IV for short) is an amazing thing to do. You'll be there to listen to a young person when they need a chat, take them on days out and support them with every day things like shopping or homework.

(Mondz, I've added this in as a warm intro, but feel free to edit/ delete!)

The role of the Independent Visitor

Independent Visitors support their mentee in their interests, mentor them to make their own decisions, and be a positive influence. On their visits, they can have a chat, go for a walk and give children the opportunity to try new activities or go to new places.

An Independent Visitor will:

  • Help a young person through the good and tough times.
  • Explore their interests and the world around them.
  • Guide and nurture where it’s needed.
  • Support a young person to understand themselves.
  • Have lots of fun!

I feel really comfortable around her. It's like I can talk to her about anything.

Your commitment

Being an IV is hugely rewarding, but requires commitment. Our young people have experienced a difficult start in life, and are counting on the adults around them to be consistent and reliable. To become an IV, you will commit to meeting a young person once a month for a minimum of two years.

Meeting them once a month, for a minimum of two years, Independent Visitors (IV) are there to listen and to help young people to talk and think about everyday things.

Our role supporting you

You will have a full induction and comprehensive specialist training and attend support sessions with other Independent Visitors as well. Part of our commitment to you, is ensuring you are supported in the work you do and there are quarterly review meetings with your dedicated Coordinator. They will discuss with you how the work is going and support with helpful advice if needed. We also pay all agreed expenses and reimburse for mileage.
